How to pick the right hitch
1. Start with your vehicle
Receiver hitches are built for specific vehicles. You need the year, make, model, and sometimes the trim or body style. The same model can need a different hitch depending on the year or whether it has a factory tow package.
2. Know the hitch classes
- Class 1 and 2: 1-1/4 inch receiver. Bike racks, cargo carriers, and light trailers.
- Class 3: 2 inch receiver. The most common choice for SUVs, trucks, and vans. Utility trailers, small campers, and boats.
- Class 4 and 5: 2 inch or 2-1/2 inch receiver. Heavy trailers on full-size trucks.
Your vehicle's towing capacity in the owner's manual always sets the limit, even if the hitch is rated higher.
3. Do not forget wiring
Any trailer with lights needs a wiring harness. Many vehicles accept a plug-in, vehicle-specific harness with no splicing. A hitch and wiring bundle is usually the simplest route.
